As the 2027 elections approach, Nigeria’s political landscape is abuzz with activities. Politicians are switching parties, forming new alliances, and making grand promises to deliver better services to the people. But beneath the surface, a crucial question lingers: Are these efforts driven by a genuine desire to serve the people, or are they merely a quest for power? The distinction is crucial. When politicians prioritize power over service, the consequences can be dire. They may promise the world, but deliver little. They may exploit the vulnerabilities of the people, but ignore their needs.
On the other hand, when politicians are driven by a genuine desire to serve, they are more likely to prioritize the welfare of the people, to listen to their concerns, and to work tirelessly to improve their lives. Politics has a dual nature – it can be a noble pursuit or a dirty game. When politicians prioritize power over service, the game becomes tainted by corruption, manipulation, and exploitation. The stakes become life-or-death, and the pursuit of power overshadows the needs of the people.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. In a truly civilized society, politics is a noble competition to serve. It’s a contest of ideas, a battle of wits, and a test of character. Politicians strive to make a positive impact, to uplift the marginalized, and to build a better future for all. Let’s hope and pray that one day, our society will embody this ideal. A society where politicians are driven by a genuine desire to serve, where the common good is prioritized over personal ambition, and where the dignity of all citizens is respected.
