Adelabu wants legislation for power sector reforms

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has called for appropriate and enabling legislation to drive reforms in the power sector.
Adelabu, who said when the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, Julian Sell, visited Abuja on Thursday in Abuja, said legislation is crucial as it would drive necessary reforms and allow market dynamics to govern the sector.
He pointed out that collaboration between the government and stakeholders is essential to address challenges related to sector liquidity, investment policies, and market governance.
Adelabu expressed his appreciation for the Spanish government’s interest and outlined the FG’s commitment to sectoral reforms aimed at improving energy access, promoting local manufacturing, and attracting international investors.
He called for a reduction of the country’s reliance on imports and boosting the export of value-added products to strengthen the economy.
“Our goal is to expand energy access, increase participation in the energy sector, and support the growth of industries and institutions,” Adelabu stated.
Earlier, Ambassador Sell highlighted the Spanish government’s interest in Nigeria’s power sector, recognizing its critical role in the country’s development.
He praised Adelabu for his efforts since assuming office and noted the frequent inquiries from Spanish companies about engaging more actively in Nigeria’s power sector.
“We are working towards a more ambitious agenda in Nigeria, focusing on renewable energy and rural electrification,” Sell said.
He mentioned ongoing projects in collaboration with the European Union, particularly in Rivers State, and the Spanish government’s involvement with the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.
Sell further revealed that a Spanish company is already collaborating with Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to address billing and revenue collection issues.
He also announced plans to organize a program through the Spanish Embassy’s Trade and Economy office to enhance Spanish companies’ understanding of the Nigerian market.
