Agency plans to track GMOs from Nigeria’s borders
The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is set to begin the tracking of Genetically Modified Organisms from Nigeria’s borders to rid the country of unauthorised entry of the products.
Dr Agnes Asagbra the Director-General (D-G) of NBMA said this on Wednesday during the visit of Hon. Pondi Gbagbojor, Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Environment to her Abuja office.
Asagbra assured Gbagbojor of willingness to partner with the lawmakers in discharging their duties while appealing for the provision of a permanent office space for NBMA in Abuja.
“Nigeria is a large country, and we need to sensitise populace in states like Kano and Lagos and equally monitor the experiment being carried out.
“We intend to build up more on our legal unit to address some challenges that confronts us as an agency.
“We can be sure to boost modern agricultural activities, we are very key in the area of food security,” the D-G said.
The House Committee Chairman said that the team’s visit to the agency was to understand the nature of its work.
Gbagbojor said that the familiarisation visits to other agencies under the environment sector would foster the well being of all the agencies for proper support of their services for the year.
