ASUU shuts down universities nationwide over FG’s unmet demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a nationwide protest, resulting in the shutdown of public universities across Nigeria.

According to ASUU leadership, the action was triggered by the Federal Government’s failure to honour previous agreements and address pressing issues, including: adequate funding for universities, improved welfare and salaries for lecturers, and

implementation of renegotiated agreements aimed at strengthening the country’s higher education system.

The union stated that its patience has been stretched beyond limits, emphasizing that only concrete government action will end the disruption.

Thousands of university students have been forced out of classrooms, once again raising concerns over prolonged academic instability and the negative impact on Nigeria’s future workforce.
