…As CIPM advocates better employer-employee relation

Experts have stressed that for any business to grow, HR managers must begin to see themselves as solution providers with a good grasp of the business.

This was the position of HR experts during a panel discussion at the Chattered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) Conference Thursday in Abuja.

The Panel which comprised of Vice President HR, Shell Nigeria, executive Director, People & Country Services, TotalEnergies EP Nigeria, Evi Ifekwe, CEO, Blackskill Limited, Olugbenga Omojola, Co;founder and CEO, Shuttlers, and Chairperson, Regenesys Group, Dr. Marko Saravanja opined that HR managers must be innovative and initiative as they seek to drive growth in any organization.

“People stay in an organization because you are able to allow them to be creative. An environment that recognizes creativity and innovation is a place that people want to stay. Everybody wants to be creative and the young people who have come in are not going to be like the old people. So, you must have a value that encourages healthy conversation, appreciation and recognizes the young person as well as the old person. The culture of the world is changing, the culture of young people, they are not old school,” Evi Ifekwe said.

She added that every HR manager must begin to see safety as a core value of their core organization.

“Feeling safe is a core value of a company, its not just about industrial safety; it’s about people feeling safe. That they come into the office and they can go home feeling as good as they were when they left their family in the morning,” she said.

Meanwhile, its communiqué at the end of the session, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria urged HR managers to create a platform that would give employees more room to express themselves.

According to the body, they need to create a culture where voices can be heard, feedback is constructive, mistakes can be used as learning points and work tools are readily available.

Also, they further urged organizations to give learning opportunities to employees to nurture their skills so that they can become improved version of themselves.

“More importantly, organizations need to create an Employee Assistance Programme to support employees who might require medical intervention to manage mental health issues.

Organizations need to focus on being value-recognizing and should be seen as committed to developing their leaders.

“For businesses to be sustainable, they need to focus on driving a workable strategy on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.

“Data analytics goes beyond looking at the numbers, we need to start thinking about trends and the big picture.

“Embrace people analytics to enable you as HR professionals deliver value and drive sustainability in the organization.

“Leverage available resources to understand your world and what the future portends.

“Organizations desirous of digital transformation need to take lessons from digital transformation success stories from Netflix, Nike, Starbucks, Audi, Airbnb, Amazon, and a couple of local success stories.

“Focused Leadership is a combination of setting a clear vision, empowering teams, transforming culture and taking agile decisions to embrace it.

“Teams must be empowered to develop a culture of learning; moving from a know-it-all to a learn-it perspective,” the communiqué further read.
