Imo gov raises workers minimum wage to ₦104,000

In a bold move to strengthen workers’ welfare and boost the state’s economy, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has announced a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for civil servants.

The new wage, which surpasses the current national minimum of ₦75,000 by over 25 percent, was unveiled during a meeting with labour leaders and workers at the Government House, Owerri, on Tuesday evening.

Key Adjustments in the New Wage Structure are:

Civil Servants: Minimum monthly pay now ₦104,000.

Medical Doctors: Entry-level salary upgraded to ₦533,000.

Lecturers (State-owned tertiary institutions): Entry-level salary raised to ₦222,000.

Retirees: ₦16 billion allocated to clear outstanding gratuity arrears.

Governor Uzodimma explained that the wage increase was made possible by improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and higher federal allocations, adding that the review was designed not just as a welfare measure but also as an economic stimulus.

“This is about more than salaries – it is about restoring dignity to our workforce and driving productivity that will, in turn, grow Imo State’s economy,” the governor said.

The Imo wage review is one of the most ambitious by any state governor in Nigeria since the recent national wage adjustment. By setting the benchmark at ₦104,000, Imo not only raises the bar for workers’ welfare but also places itself under scrutiny.
