Late planning, poor consultation hampering effective Hajj operations – Prof Gabadeen

The Director, Academic Planning Unit, University of Abuja and Deputy Rectory, Academic, National Hajj Institute of Nigeria, Professor Wasiu Gabadeen has identified late planning and proper consultation by government in the appointment of those saddles with responsibility of managing the day to day operations of Hajj in Nigeria as major factors responsible for crisis encounter during Hajj.
He stated these during a paper presentation at National Mosque auditorium Wednesday in Abuja.
The annual event organised by Independent Hajj Reporter’s (IHR) 2024 annual lecture and award ceremony had as its theme “Strategic Management for Effective 2025 Hajj Operation”
According to him, Hajj operation needs to commence immediately after returning from the completion of Hajj exercise in Saudi, nothing stops the commission from making early pronouncements on the expectations of intending pilgrims.
This, he said, would help an individual to plan adequately for the next exercise.
Drawing his analysis from the academic point of view, the professor said a number of Hajj officials can be determined in a ratio of number of officials to pilgrims.
Prof Gabadeen frowned at the way the managers of Hajj Commission are appointed and removed from the office, saying stakeholders are not being consulted to select wisely.
He said it has “created room for mockery of Islam whenever there is mismanagement in the running of the organization”. He cautioned the media to be guided in their reportage to avoid putting Islam in a bad light before the public.
The Coordinator, Independent Hajj Reporters, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed highlighted the success of the last exercise commending stakeholders for their support.
The representative of the Jigawa state government, on behalf of Governor Umar Sambo, promised to host next year’s IHR lecture and award programme in the state.
The session was chaired by Sheikh Bala Lau.
