NERC convenes stakeholders’ meeting on grid code, NESIS regulations

Stakeholders from across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) convened in Abuja for a consultative engagement focused on finalising updates to the Nigerian Electricity Supply and Installation Standards (NESIS) Regulations.

Speaking at the session, NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Yusuf Ali, explained that the regulatory document is now at an advanced stage of revision and will be finalised with expert input from the Abuja session and a follow-up engagement in Lagos.

He noted that the code is critical to guiding the operations of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which became operational in April of the previous year.

He further highlighted that the ongoing review reflects the significant evolution within the electricity sector, including the transition to state electricity regulators, stressing that collaboration remains essential to ensure system-wide stability.

Draft revisions were made publicly available online for six weeks to enable broad-based input, while in-person sessions allowed experts to robustly debate and refine key provisions.

“The goal is to develop the best possible regulatory instruments through collaboration, ensuring they are fit for purpose and responsive to the sector’s evolving realities,” he stated.

Highlights of the meeting included: Review of key amendments to the NESIS Regulations, review of stakeholders’ comments submitted online, review of key amendments to the Grid Code Version 3, and omments and observations from stakeholders

Stakeholders from the State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, Academics, and other key NESI Stakeholders participated in the session, reinforcing NERC’s commitment to inclusive stakeholder engagement and the development of robust regulatory frameworks.
