NGA hails landmark GECF appointments of Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo

The President of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) and Africa Regional Director of the International Gas Union (IGU), Mr. Akachukwu Nwokedi, has congratulated Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Managing Director of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), on his historic election as Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) during the 27th Ministerial Meeting held in Doha, Qatar.
Mr. Nwokedi also extended warm felicitations to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, on his emergence as President of the 2026 GECF Ministerial Meeting, describing it as a significant milestone that reinforces Nigeria’s rising influence and leadership in the global gas landscape.
According to the NGA President, the twin recognitions of Dr. Mshelbila and Minister Ekpo mark a defining moment for Nigeria and Africa’s gas industry, showcasing the nation’s growing reputation as a thought leader and strategic player in the international energy community.
“These appointments are not only personal achievements but also a national pride,” Mr. Nwokedi remarked. “They reflect the world’s confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to shape conversations, policies, and partnerships that will define the future of gas. The leadership and expertise of both men will strengthen cooperation, market stability, and shared prosperity across the global gas value chain.”
He noted that Dr. Mshelbila’s elevation to the helm of the GECF signifies recognition of his proven technical depth and visionary leadership at NLNG, while Minister Ekpo’s new role as President of the 2026 GECF Ministerial Meeting underscores Nigeria’s strategic voice in global energy governance.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s and Africa’s commitment to energy development, Mr. Nwokedi emphasized that gas remains central to sustainable industrialization, inclusive economic growth, and the clean energy transition.
“Natural gas remains the anchor for industrial growth, energy security, and climate balance,” he said. “Nigeria and the African continent will continue to champion equitable access to cleaner energy, advocating a just transition that benefits all.”
He concluded that the global recognition accorded to Nigerian leadership within the GECF reaffirms the country’s position as a dependable, forward-looking, and innovative partner in advancing the future of energy.
