Nigeria: Electricity workers suspend strike after FG’s intervention

Workers under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) have called off their industrial action after the Federal Ministry of Power’s intervention.

The strike was suspended following an agreement was reached on Thursday.

Both unions had earlier this week downed tolls to draw attention to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) indifference to welfare and operational concerns issues of its staff.

According to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) seen by Blueprint all the parties revealed that the unions should look at the report of the committee between October 6 and 7, 2025, with a view to commencing its implementation in the same month. Also, the TCN and NISO were to jointly evaluate the financial implications of the report and prepare an implementation plan for presentation to the minister and the unions.

In addition, both unions would reconvene with TCN and NISO management to address other outstanding issues, while the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was asked to fast-track the review of tariffs for TCN and NISO to enable implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

“That no employee will be victimised on the account of participation in the industrial action.

“Based on the above, the Union agreed to suspend their action to allow these resolutions to be activated,” the agreement stated.
