Nigeria: FG advocates bamboo cultivation, utilization
The Nigerian government has taken a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Nigerians by promoting bamboo cultivation and utilization.
The Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, made this known on Wednesday to commemorate the 2023 World Bamboo Day in Abuja.
He said Bamboo, often referred to as the “green gold,” has been an integral part of our culture and heritage for centuries saying it has proven to be a true gift of nature considering its versatility and numerous environmental and economic benefits.
According to him, Bamboo plays a crucial role in combating climate change. Its ability to sequester carbon dioxide and release oxygen surpasses that of many other plant species.
“It also offers opportunities for economic growth and poverty alleviation and its diverse applications in different sectors of the economy make it a valuable resource for job creation and income generation.
On his part, Commissioner of Environment Kogi state, Mr Victor Omofaiye, states that Kogi state is the highest producer of Bamboo.
“Bamboo will reduce the emission of the country, add value to the economy of the country and reduce the challenge of climate change.
The Director of Federal Department of Forestry, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs Hajara Umar Sami, said that bamboo is used to restore land, use for conservation to reduce emission and address the challenge of climate change.
“We will develop a policy and present it to the National Council of Environment and develop a road map.
