NSC advocates strong laws for maritime sector growth, development

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima says Nigeria needs a very strong law that is in tandem with the modern realities in the maritime sector.
Bar Akutah noted this at the ongoing 17th International Maritime seminar for Judges, organised by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja.
He said there are some basic requirements that we should adopt in their laws and we need to bring the law to speed to modern realities of the maritime sector and today, Mr. President has found it necessary to focus attention in the maritime sector to grow the economy.
According to him, the law will give them the regulatory framework to provide regulatory service in this sector especially to come about the efficiency of the sector so that the business will grow and Nigerian economy will be better for it.
Also, Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr Abdullahi Sule FNSE, said the benefits of the seminar not only contribute to the professional development of judges but also help in promoting a conducive legal framework for the maritime industry.
He said “as we strive to position Nigeria as a global maritime hub, it is crucial to have a robust legal system that can effectively address the evolving challenges and opportunities in the sector.
“I am particularly pleased to see the collaboration between the Nigerian Shippers Council and the Nasarawa State Government in advancing the interests of our state and the country as a whole.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, Board of Governors, National Judicial Institute, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola said the National Policy on Justice recommends continuous training as one of the key elements that guarantees the independence of the Judiciary, as well as the quality and efficiency of the judicial system.
“As we are all aware, training and capacity-building is also an integral part of the legal profession for members of the Nigerian Bar and the Bench, irrespective of your chosen field,” he said.
