President Biden pardons Garvey, others

President Joe Biden of the United States, has pardoned five persons, including the iconic Black nationalist and civil rights activist, Marcus Garvey, who died in 1940.

The Presidential pardon comes on the eve of his departure from the White House.

Donald trump is expected to be sworn-in on 20th January as President of the United States of America.  

In 1923, Garvey was sentenced for mail fraud. President Calvin Coolidge commuted Garvey’s sentence in 1927. Biden has now issued a complete pardon. 

Garvey is believed to be the first Black person to organise a mass movement among African-Americans in the United States.

He established the Black Star Shipping Line and founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association.
