SON takes sensitization of substandard products to Zuba electrical market
Standard Organisation Nigeria (SON) has taken stakeholders sensitization workshop on the eradication of substandard electrical products to International Electric Al Electronic and Allied Market in Zuba, Abuja.
The Director General/ Chief Executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke during the sensitization on Monday said the workshop is in collaboration with the Abuja Electrical Materials Dealers’ Welfare Association.
The DG who was represented by the Coordinator North Central of SON, Marline Waziri said the engagement is particularly significant, as it aligns with their shared commitment to ensuring that only safe, quality, and standard electrical materials are distributed and sold within our markets and across Nigeria.
She said it is a direct response to the proactive steps taken by the Abuja Electrical Materials Dealers’ Welfare Association to prohibit the sale of substandard products among its members.
She said as part of today’s sensitization, the Inspectorate and Compliance Directorate will take you through key tools and schemes that SON employs to promote compliance with standards.
” These include our Product Registration, Product Authentication, Market Surveillance, and other regulatory mechanisms designed to help genuine businesses thrive while protecting the Nigerian consumer.
“These also reinforces the Federal Government’s Nigeria First Policy, which seeks to promote the production, distribution, and patronage of goods and services that meet acceptable quality benchmarks and are made or approved in Nigeria.
“Compliance with standards is a critical pillar of this policy. By choosing standard electrical products, you are not only protecting consumers but also strengthening local industries, supporting job creation, and driving national development.
“We project that this collaborative effort will lead to a significant reduction in the circulation of substandard electrical and electronic products in Abuja and its environs, while also boosting the internally generated revenue of the Organization through improved compliance,” she said.
She further emphasized that the eradication of substandard products is not a task for SON alone. It requires the active partnership of stakeholders like you, dealers, distributors, consumers, and the general public.
Also, the Vice Chairman of the market, Chike Nwanza lauded SON for the workshop stating that it will sensitize their people, for them to know the reason of selling a substandard product, and they appreciate it.
He urged the government to guide them and give them the guideline on how to go about their businesses.
Also, the secretary of Zuba International Electronics Market, Hassan Godwin in his words said that “the sensitization. It’s very good, at least we are enlightened. If you check the way people are very happy, the way governments through SON came to our market today to show us the difference between standard and substandard of goods”.
