TETFund boosts ABU campus mobility with 20 solar-powered tricycles

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has supplied 20 electric tricycles to Ahmadu Bello University to enhance campus transportation. 

In a statement signed by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (NAM), the intervention also aims at promoting innovation, and advancing green energy solutions in Nigerian universities. 

The tricycle is powered by lithium-ion battery enhancement with a solar panel. 

It is also powered by a six-kilowatt lithium-ion battery that can move between 130-150 Km on a single charge. 

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, acknowledged the receipt of the tricycles during the University 555th (Regular) Senate Meeting that was held on Thursday, 30th October, 2025.

Prof Ahmed, who appreciated the TETFund immensely for the intervention, said the gesture would further support students and staff welfare. 

The Vice-Chancellor explained that the tricycles were in addition to the 20 units of CNG powered tricycles earlier received by the university from the federal government. 

The tricycles will be deployed for operations after installation of the dedicated charging station by IRS Green Energy Limited, the firm contracted to supply the tricycles.
