CBN reaffirms ₦100 banknote as legal tender

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has moved to dispel confusion surrounding the status of the ₦100 banknote, following reports of its rejection by some businesses and individuals.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Hakama Sidi‑Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, the apex bank emphasized that both the commemorative ₦100 note, introduced during Nigeria’s centenary, and the standard ₦100 note remain valid for all transactions nationwide.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN hereby reiterates that both the commemorative ₦100 banknote and the standard ₦100 banknote remain legal tender in Nigeria and must be accepted for all transactions,” the statement read.
The Bank cautioned against the refusal of the standard ₦100 note, stressing that such actions violate the provisions of the CBN Act and erode public confidence in the national currency.
“The Bank will not hesitate to apply appropriate enforcement measures against any person or entity found to be in breach,” Mrs. Sidi‑Ali warned.
The CBN reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the Naira and ensuring smooth currency circulation across the country.
It urged Nigerians to accept all banknotes duly issued by the Bank, noting that rejection undermines economic stability.

By restating the ₦100 note’s legal tender status, the Bank aims to restore confidence and prevent unnecessary disruptions in everyday transactions.
