Equity market sheds N25bn on profit taking

The domestic equity market capitalisation declined by N25 billion after two days holidays to celebrate Easter, following investors profit taking activities.

Market capitalisation listed equities depreciated by 0.04 per cent to N59.095 trillion from N59.120 trillion it closed last week.

The NGX All Share Index also went down by 43.92 basis points to 104518.14 points from 104562.06 points reported previously.

As a result, year to date return stood at 39.78 per cent as NGX printed 23 gainers against 17 losers.

An analysis of the investment showed that May and Baker led gainers table, gaining 10 per cent to close at N6.05 per share, Ikeja Hotel followed with a gain of 9.95 per cent to N7.07 per unit, Chams Plc added 9.90 per cent to close at N2.11 per share, Unity Bank traded 9.66 per cent to close at N2.27 per unit AIICO Insurance increased by 9.65 per cent to close at N1.25 per share.

On the contrary, UACN recorded the highest loss during the day, declining by 9.82 per cent to close at N12.40 per share, Julius Berger trailed with a loss of 9.17 per cent to close at N59.95 per unit, ABC Transport down by 9.09 per cent to close at N0.70 per share, Universal Insurance fell by 7.69 per cent to close at N0.36 per unit while UPDC declined by 6.67 per cent to close at N1.40 per share.

Volume of trades increased by 77.583 million shares, representing 12.27 per cent as investors traded 545.492 million shares valued at N14.614 billion in 12925 deals against 623.075 million shares worth N16.954 billion exchanged hands the previous day in 10257 deals.

Transactions in the shares of GTCO Plc led market activities with 84.652 million shares worth N4.484 billion, AccessCorp followed with account of 68.886 million shares valued at N1.734 billion, United Bank for Africa traded 65.487 million shares worth N1.833 billion, Zenith Bank exchanged 62.585 million shares cost N2.774 billion while Transnational Corporation of Nigeria exchanged 27.425 million shares worth N383.626 million.
