Group demands 24-hour electricity from gov Oborevwori to boost Delta economy

A civil society group has issued a passionate appeal to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, demanding immediate and drastic action to fix the state’s persistent power crisis.
In an open letter signed by Morrison Igelige on behalf of the Solidarity Group for Stable Electricity in Isoko Nation, the group argued that despite receiving immense financial resources, the lack of stable power continues to cripple local businesses and deter potential investors.
“Providing uninterrupted electricity is a guaranteed driver for economic growth and stability,” the group stated. “If you are truly committed to the advancement of Delta State, this is the time to demonstrate it.”
The group highlighted those constitutional amendments decentralizing electricity laws, alongside the passage of the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Law, have already cleared the legal path for state-driven power generation. However, they noted that citizens are tired of mere policies and want tangible infrastructure.
To achieve a reliable 24-hour power supply, the group urged the governor to prioritize key infrastructure developments: Build Independent Power Plants (IPPs): Construct state-wide power plants capable of backing the entire region.; Reactivate Abandoned Projects: Complete critical power infrastructure, specifically the Okpai second phase, the Oghara gas turbine, and the Sapele gas turbine; and Appoint Capable Leadership: Ensure a highly competent Commissioner for Energy implements expert roadmaps.
The statement emphasised that stable electricity would drastically lower household operating expenses, create massive employment opportunities, and permanently normalize the local economy.
“Deltans are fully aware of our state’s potential,” the group concluded. “We call upon His Excellency to convert these resources and the enabling legislation into tangible infrastructure that guarantees 24-hour electricity for all communities.”
