Strike: Partial compliance as banks in Lagos open for business

Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria remained uneasily calm on Tuesday with banks and other commercial activities in full swing despite ongoing national industrial action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

It would be recalled that the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) is among the various unions in the country that joined the industrial actions.

However, a visit to many of the banks’ headquarters in Victoria Island shows that all the banks opened for business as usual, and also other businesses in the area.

Similarly, on the mainland, bank branches opened for business as many customers trooped in to conduct their various businesses.

The NLC and TUC had said they would embark on a nationwide strike from midnight on November 14.

Festus Osifo, TUC president, while speaking with reporters on Monday, said the strike would remain until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibilities”.

The nationwide strike is a protest against the alleged brutality meted on Joe Ajaero, NLC president, in Imo state on November 1.
