Tinubu commissions renewable energy college in Kogi varsity

President Ahmed Bola Tinubu on Tuesday commissioned the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS) at Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Osara in Kogi State, describing the project as a major step towards expanding access to renewable energy education in Nigeria and across Africa.
The President, who was represented at the ceremony by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said the Barefoot Renewable Energy College in Osara is the first of its kind on the continent.
He explained that the institution is designed to provide practical, hands-on training in solar and renewable energy technologies, particularly targeting rural communities and young people seeking technical skills.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to sustainable development, clean energy transition and youth empowerment.
In his remarks, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, commended the Tinubu administration for establishing the college, noting that it would significantly boost capacity building among youths in the state.
He said the institution would open up opportunities for job creation, technology acquisition and economic growth, especially for young people in rural communities.
The governor urged youths in the state to take full advantage of the facility by acquiring relevant skills in renewable energy to improve their livelihoods and contribute to national development.
Also speaking, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, praised the President for his commitment to promoting renewable energy education in the country.
He described the project as a landmark achievement that would advance skills development, strengthen community empowerment and position Nigeria as a leader in renewable energy education in Africa.
