VC advocates regular health check-ups for early cancer detection

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehimi has urged staff, students and general public, to prioritise their health by undergoing regular medical check-ups for early detection of diseases, including cancer.
Prof. Fawehimi made this call in his goodwill message on cancer awareness programme on Tuesday at college of health sciences auditorium, University of Abuja main campus organised by university of Abuja women’s association (UAWA).
He called on the government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to intensify efforts in health education and screening programmes.
The Vice Chancellor said, “Prevention is better than cure”, while urging people to take charge of their health before diseases manifest.
In his welcome address, the local organising chairperson and chairperson, board of trustees University of Abuja women’s association (UAWA) Professor Hauwa Imam described cancer as a deadly disease that must be fought collectively. She said UAWA is inspired by survivors, resilient families, and advocates who bridge the care gap. We are committed to dispelling myths and stigma and providing practical support, she stated.
In her welcome speech, the patroness UAWA, Dr. Hadeezat Omotayo Fawehimi said that we gathered under the “theme”, United by Unique – Know it, Check it, Act Early,” a call that resonates deeply with our mission to empower our community with knowledge, encourage in detection, and inspire action against cancer, she maintain.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Nandi Tokki, represented the Director General of the national institute of cancer research and treatment (NICRAT), Professor Usman Malami Aliyu, highlighted the significance of the World Cancer Day, an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). She emphasised the importance of understanding cancer risks, early detection, and treatment.
Dr. Tokki noted key warning signs of cancer which include unusual breast changes, fatigue, abnormal bleeding, persistent coughing, and non-healing sores or ulcers. She advised adopting prevention strategies such as avoiding tobacco use, maintaining a healthy diet, undergoing regular screenings, and engaging in physical exercise.
Also speaking, Her Excellency, Chief Barr. (Dr.) Chioma Uzodimma, first lady and wife of executive governor of Imo State who was also the mother of the day at the occasion urged the public to embrace early cancer detection and avoid neglecting routine health check-ups.
She commended the organisers for their efforts in enlightening the populace about cancer prevention. she reiterated the importance of uniting against cancer, stressing that research and knowledge sharing are crucial in combating the disease. He urged individuals to be proactive about their health.
She also emphasised the critical role of pharmacists in cancer research, treatment, and awareness campaigns. She praised the University of Abuja Management for supporting such an impactful initiative She stressed the need for specialised care for cancer patients, emphasising the necessity of thorough research before treatment.
In her vote of thanks, the secretary, local organising committee (LOC), Arc. Khadijah A. Umar expressed gratitude to the University management and guests for their participation in the event. She said your contributions whether through sponsorship, partnership, expertise, or encouragement were instrumental in bringing our vision to life.
The event served as a call to action for individuals, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to prioritise early detection, prevention, and research in the fight against cancer.
