EU provides over €500,000 to advance COP6 mandates under Minamata convention

With more than €500,000 in support from the European Union, the Secretariat of the Minamata Convention on Mercury will implement a set of targeted activities mandated by COP6.
The Programme of Work of the Minamata Convention for 2026-2027 includes these requests, whose implementation relies largely on voluntary financial contribution from Parties.
The 6th meeting of the conference of the parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP) took place in Geveva Switzerland, from November 3 – 7 2025, During COP 5, the conference of the parties elected Osvaldo Alvarez (Chile) as the President of COP 6.
“The contribution by the European Union will help the Secretariat provide technical, scientific, and policy support required to advance implementation in response to COP6 decisions through key areas such as mercury-added skin-lightening products, dental amalgam, supply sources and trade, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining, as well as scientific cooperation, digital strategy implementation and policy coherence.
COP7 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 6 to 10, 2027, and will mark the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Minamata Convention.
“Through this financial support, the Secretariat will help Parties take the next steps to promote ratification, strengthen effective implementation, and contribute to the Convention’s objective to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury.
